Expectations are high for students entering into a research relationship with mentors in the community. Students accepting this challenge develop a set of research skills and demonstrate the maturity and behaviors that are characteristic of professionals. Students work on their projects 5-8 hours per week during September - February. This work time includes onsite work, reading background literature, and writing.
Initial Visit with Mentors
Students attend an initial meeting with their mentors. At this session, the mentor and the student arrange a mutually acceptable work schedule and discuss objectives and the project proposal. Depending on the project, students can work with a mentor remotely. After the initial meeting, the student will discuss a proposed work schedule with KAMSC’s Research Director.
Attendance and Transportation
Prompt attendance during arranged hours is integral to a real-world, onsite research experience. If the student is absent due to illness, school conflict, or inclement weather, the student must call the mentor as much in advance as possible. Mentors are not obligated to make up time lost. Each student is expected to provide their transportation to and from the work site. Students working at WMU’s campus should pay for parking in metered guest lots.
Research Team Meetings and Work at KAMSC
The KAMSC Research Director uses Google Classroom and monthly meetings after school to support students with their project timeline. She assigns permission slips, ISEF safety forms, draft and final research papers, and posters. Students can earn a semester credit in Independent Research.
Safety and Dress Code
Students must be conscious of safe working habits at all times. Mentors must review safety procedures with students, which may require attending a formal safety seminar. Students are to dress appropriately for their work situation as determined by their mentor.
Confidentiality
Students are to maintain and respect the confidentiality of the organization. A breach of confidence may result in the student's removal from the research assignment. However, the students are to report any form of personal harassment to the KAMSC Research Director.
Medical Insurance
Parents/guardians are responsible for the student’s medical insurance coverage. Students are not paid and are not covered under Workman’s Compensation while at the research site. In most cases, the students are regarded as visitors.
